【minimalism】Why you should consolidate your spending to credit cards.

投稿日:

Are you a cash person? Or are you a cashless person? I am definitely a cashless person. The reason is that it is easier to manage my expenses.

Various methods of cashless payment

There are various types of cashless payment methods, including electronic money such as Suica and paypay, and credit cards, but I definitely recommend credit cards. Many companies have entered the e-money market, and the competition among them is fierce. However, it is possible that some stores accept paypay but not Rakuten Edy, so it is impossible to narrow it down to just one cashless payment method. If you live in an urban area, you may have to use transportation-related electronic money to use trains or buses. This would result in a situation where you have to use multiple e-money accounts, which would complicate the management of your expenses. In addition, even though e-money is cashless, you may still have to deposit money in cash, making it more difficult than you might imagine to manage your expenses.

Reasons why credit cards should be used

This is where the old-fashioned credit card comes in as the main form of cashless payment. Basically, whenever possible, purchases are made with a single credit card payment. In today’s society, there is hardly a store that does not accept credit cards. Even Daiso and Saizeriya accept credit cards. Some privately owned restaurants still accept only cash, but unless you use such restaurants on a daily basis, you can complete your daily shopping with a credit card alone. Rather than cash, which is difficult to keep track of, credit cards are an indispensable tool for optimizing spending, as they allow you to easily keep track of when, where, and how much you have spent.

Tie it to your credit card

Even so, there are many occasions when you need to use electronic money. In particular, electronic money for transportation is a necessity for city dwellers. Electronic money needs to be charged, but if cash is used here, money transfers become more complicated and it becomes difficult to manage expenses. Therefore, you should also charge your electronic money with a credit card instead of cash. If you link your credit card to your account in the e-money app on your phone and can charge from your card, you will have peace of mind even when your balance is low. Always decide on one main type of electronic money and, as a rule, do not use any other type of electronic money. The only other option for your main electronic money is the transportation system. There is almost no merit in using multiple types of electronic money. It is better to prepare only one more e-money other than transportation-related e-money as a sub-electronic money, so that you can make a payment when you cannot use your main e-money. We recommend that you use local transportation e-money as the main one and paypay or Rakuten Edy as the sub one.

Some people argue that using credit cards makes you lose control of your spending, and that cash is less wasteful. However, unlike in the past, it is now easy to check when, what, and how much you have spent using a smartphone app. Some cards offer a service where you can set a monthly spending limit and they will email you when you are approaching the limit. By using the smartphone app to check how much you have spent frequently, you can optimize your monthly spending while saving yourself the trouble of keeping a household budget.

Up to two credit cards.

When you have credit cards, do not have more than two, a main and a sub. Credit cards have a credit limit based on your personal credit. This is not an amount per card. Think of it as your overall credit card limit. If you have many credit cards, the credit limit per credit card will become smaller, and the debits from your bank account will be scattered, making it more complicated to manage your spending. Cancel any credit cards that you have somehow grabbed for discounts at stores now, and keep only two cards on hand, a main card and a sub-card. Rakuten Card is convenient because one person can have two cards. I have two Rakuten Cards, one for my personal business payments and one for my personal spending. I can check each statement separately, and I can set whether my bank account is debited from the same account or from a different account for each card, according to my preference. I personally recommend the Rakuten Card and the amazon card. The Rakuten Card is a great way to save money by earning more Rakuten points than usual on various services such as shopping, travel, insurance, etc. The amazon card allows you to earn double points by using amazon points purchased with your credit card when you shop at amazon. If you drive a car, you probably have an ETC card, which of course should also be from your main credit card company. Considering the possibility of magnetic defects, it is a good idea to apply for ETC on a sub card as well, so that you will have peace of mind in case of an emergency.
